Not quite. Trail Hunt combines elements of mantrailing and tracking. It encourages your dog to problem-solve independently while following a specific odour on trails in different environments.
No experience needed! All new teams start with a Foundations course, where you’ll learn the core skills step-by-step and build a strong working relationship with your dog.
Any dogs new to the sport MUST complete the foundations course first.
All dogs can enjoy Trail Hunt, regardless of breed, size, or age. If your dog is physically fit and enjoys using their nose, they’re likely to love it.
Yes. Trail Hunt is designed to be inclusive. Dogs work one at a time and rest in the car between turns, making it suitable for reactive, nervous, or overexcitable dogs. It can be taught in secure fields but there will be an extra cost involved to hire.
You’ll need a well-fitting harness, a long line (5–10 metres), and plenty of high-value treats or a favourite toy. Your Trail Hunt Odour Pod will be provided as part of your Foundations pack.
Not at all! Dogs with mantrailing experience often adapt well. The core skills are transferable and your dog may even benefit from the fresh challenges.
Trail Hunt sessions run at outdoor locations across South and Central Cumbria, with varied terrain including woodland, parks, and urban towns and villages.
Most group sessions last around 2 to 3 hours, depending on how many dogs are working. Each dog takes turns while others rest in the car.
Bookings are taken through BookWhen where you can make secure card payments.
On receiving your booking I will email you the foundations theory video for you to watch in the comfort of your own home. Then you attend practical 1 at Birkrigg and the dates for the rest of the practicals will be agreed between us.
